Undergraduate students Ellie Mandelker '26 and Olivia Schaedler '26, both double majoring in Art History and Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations (AMC), jetted off to Italy over the summer to attend the San Gemini Preservations Studies program (SGPS) with support from the Art History Lovett Travel Fellowship and Charles Garside AMC Summer Travel Award.
During the month long program, Ellie and Liv attended classes focused on traditional painting methods and workshops and restoration and conservation theory while staying in a traditional Italian cloister converted into housing units and a museum.
Hear what Ellie has to say about their unforgettable experience:
“The Mary Ellen Hale Lovett Travel Fellowship Award in Art History and The Charles Garside AMC Summer Travel Award gave us the opportunity to have the most fulfilling and eye-opening summer we could have ever imagined! The month we spent in San Gemini was filled with countless once-in-a-lifetime experiences, including visits to the Uffizi, the towns of Assisi and Carsulae, and an art restoration lab. Studying the nuances of art restoration and conservation alongside the inner mechanisms and chemistry of traditional painting techniques gave us a unique perspective on art history, and we are so grateful for our time there.”
Those interested in applying to SGPS next summer should reach out to Dr. Sophie Crawford-Brown, Director of AMC, or ask Ellie and Liv personally about their experience if you spot them on campus! Applications for the 2024 Art History Lovett Travel Fellowship will open at the beginning of the spring semester.
